Personal Branding and The Easiest Job Interview You'll Ever Have
So, someone picks up your resume. Now what?
Well, that person will scan your resume and cover letter. They'll see your website and socials listed at the top of the page. If you're really interested in the job, maybe the URL is personalized, (but still redirects to your main blog page). YourWebsite.c0m/[Their Company]
The Context Behind The Resume
There they see a whole host of articles or videos or your podcast about the things that stress out the hiring manager. Regardless of whether this person is the hiring manager, HR manager or a recruiter, that will resonate. Because that's the true aim of hiring for this position.
This content paints a picture of you as someone who truly understands the role you’re applying for and how your position would fit into the overall organization. Your personality comes through, giving them a fuller picture of who you are as a person. You are already more robust as a candidate then your competition, who are just names and bullet points on resumes.
Handle your content right, and they will know whether or not you'll be a good fit. If they like the picture you paint, you'll land an interview. If they don't, you probably don't want to work there anyway.
They Like You. They Really Like You
This means, when you get an interview, they have a good idea of who you are and what you bring to the table. The nature of the interview has now changed radically.
For the resume brigade, the interview is a process of trying to figure out who the candidate is and if they'd be a good fit. There are boilerplate questions designed to elicit and evaluate responses with little to no context.
For you, they think the already know who you are and how you'll fit in… and they're interested. Their sole goal for your interview is simply to verify you are who they think you are.
You Content Is Prep For The Interview
Furthermore, by writing about the various aspects of the job, you will have just recently done research, developed insights and probably at least started formulating your own philosophy behind the work you hope to be doing. And if you encounter a question you aren't sure how to answer, use the old politicians’ trick of answering the question by steering the conversation back to your own talking points.
It might seem counterintuitive, but when you make your brand about solving their problems, the interview then becomes about your ideas on solving their problems. If they like your content, your interview will pretty much be you repeating the high points of your own content.
It really will be the easiest job interview you've ever had.
